Humility, is accepting the fact that you are nothing without Jesus, and you cannot do anything without the anointing and ability of God upon you. Without Him you can do nothing. No flesh will be able to glory in His presence.
The Lord allows us to be in situations that will teach us humility. Moses was taken from a basket in the river to be trained by God. He eventually went to the back side of the desert herding sheep, for forty years. The Lord called him to be a leader of His people, after he learned the lesson of humility. Moses was rejected by his own people but the Lord still called him to be their leader. The leaders of the people of God are never chosen by man.
The Lord Jesus Christ chooses those He has trained, qualified and equipped. The one to be chosen and called King David learned humility as a Shepherd. When all his brothers were called to eat with the Prophet, he did not leave his job. He stayed where he was told and learned humility.
The Lord called him when all his family considered him unworthy. He became King David through a path of humility. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was rejected by society, but she was called by our Father God because she had learned the lesson of humility.
We have to understand that God uses the humble, not the proud.
For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. -Luke 14:11
If there is an ounce of pride in you, Satan will use it to destroy you. He will let you be great at first but it will be a slow painful, horrifying experience in the end. What you strive for the most, in the flesh, Satan will use for your destruction in the end. Humble yourselves before God, do things His way, and the end result will be victorious for you.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. – Philippians 4:13
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. – John 15:5
