Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. -Matthew 7:6
I believe the Scriptures here are talking about your common, run of the mill dog. Not to belittle your household pets, but dogs do not appreciate holy things. You don’t give them your diamond ring. You don’t give them your best pair shoes, even though they may attempt to run off with them. You protect those things from the dog because the dog innocently does not know what to do with it.
You don’t take a valuable necklace or a real pearl necklace that was dug out of some oysters and hang them around a hog’s neck. Why? Because they’re probably just going to drop it in the mud and eat it up; and you don’t want to know where it goes from there.
No, God is talking to us about this. Why do you think God is going to be any different with the things He considers valuable? Do you think He is going to give holy things to those who will not appreciate them? Do you think He’s going to give holy things to those who will not esteem them? He is the one that has established this as a spiritual principle. This is a spiritual principle.
So if you don’t value holy things, if you don’t esteem revelation from the Lord, if you don’t value the Word, then you will probably never be called up any higher than you are right now. I’m not saying you can’t be born again and go to heaven in that condition. People do it every day. People just get saved, don’t allow the Lord to change their life and then barely slide in as we often say. They don’t really slide in, it’s the blood of Jesus that takes us all in.
So you see, if we want to move on with God, if we want to grow with God and move up in the spiritual things, then we have to esteem the holy things of God. We can’t take them for granted; we can’t treat them as if they’re everyday, common things. We have to treat them as precious and valuable, as the holy things of the Lord. As we do this, we’ll move up in the spiritual things of God and move on with Him so that we can fulfill what He has called us to do on the earth.
