If you have a desire to be used by God, no matter your age, location, or level of spirituality, know that God wants to use you. He wants to use all of us. But just because He wants to use all of us, that doesn’t mean He can. We have to position ourselves in a place where we’re usable. Thankfully, there are some things we can do to position ourselves in that place.
It Starts with Faith
It all starts with faith. Not just any faith, but a deep, abiding trust in God’s Word and His promises. When we have faith, we’re not just believing in God, we’re believing God. We’re trusting that He’s good, that He’s faithful, and that He’s working everything out for our good. What is that faith based on? The Word of God, of course. That means you have to be in the Word, reading and studying it. Without that, your faith is never going to grow.
Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Meditate on that for a while. Everything you desire from God, based on the Word, is composed of faith. It is the substance of those things. That’s how important faith is.
Crucifying the Flesh
Here’s the hard truth though: being used by God requires sacrifice. It means laying aside your own desires, your own plans, and your own understanding. It means crucifying the flesh and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you completely.
You can’t be used by God if you’re continually wanting to do your own thing, because God’s will and your plans will eventually collide. You must submit your life—your plans, desire, and will—to Him. When you do, He can use you in a mighty way.
Acts 10:38 tells us how Jesus operated: “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil.” Jesus was fully submitted to God. He was anointed, He was led by the Spirit, and He was focused on doing good. Not just any good, but the Father’s will (which is always good).
Completing Your Assignment
The Lord spoke to me recently and said something that was hard to receive. If you will receive it though, it will help you grow. He said, “Most people in the body of Christ are out of My will.” Now, this doesn’t mean they’re not saved. It means they’re not fulfilling the specific purpose God has for their lives. When we’re in God’s perfect will, things just seem to fall into place a little easier. That doesn’t mean you won’t have problems. It means they’re a whole lot easier to deal with.
Practical Steps to Being Used
- Seek God’s Presence Daily
- Listen More Than You Speak
- Be Willing to Be Uncomfortable
- Obey Immediately When God Speaks
- Stay Humble and Teachable
The Ultimate Goal
Being used by God isn’t about becoming a superstar or the center of attention. In fact, if that’s your mindset, you need to spend some time with God to get that out of you. If not, it will be your downfall. Pride comes before a fall. Being used by God is about becoming a vessel. It’s about being so surrendered to God that He can use you whenever, wherever, and however He chooses. God is with Us!
